This photo, like ML42734381, shows conclusively that this bird is younger than adult and that it still evinces considerable juvenile plumage. It also shows the bird's left wing uplifted sufficiently that one sees part of the underside and the axillaries. Despite the shadow on the flank due to the uplifted wing, one can discern, immediately underneath the wing, white axillaries that are cleanly bordered by dark straight-edge feathering at the front. This is characteristic of juveniles of species. VERY IMPORTANT: This individual, which I suggest is an advanced juvenile, is starting to evince the striking blue on its feet that will become the more so as it enters adulthood. Please look closely at the top of its left foot. It shows striking evidence of bright blue, a unique characteristic of this species, its "calling card." The bright white light reflecting off the sunlit diving board, right beside the leg and foot (which are shadowed from direct sunlight), is illuminating the blue foot very nicely. It even looks like that blue reflection from the foot is sufficiently intense that it is reflecting off the white feathers of the bird's "thigh," directly above its leg, giving it a slight bluish cast. (By the way, the bright, arrow-shaped area underneath the booby's uplifted left wing is not, according to my visual analysis, a marking on the underwing; one simply is looking at the lake's water through a gap between the booby's uplifted wing and its back.)

We had first visited this bird at about 11:00 AM. The sky was overcast, and the booby basically slept, except for one brief stand-up after which it immediately went back to sleep. We decided to return in the afternoon when, we surmised, the sky might be more sunny and the bird more active, providing thereby better looks and more opportunity for photos. We returned at about 1:00 PM, when the sun was out and the bird, indeed, was somewhat more active. On both occasions, though, we never saw it anywhere than on the tip of the diving board. On our return visit we spent perhaps 20 minutes there, observing and photographing the bird. Five photos and related commentary are provided herewith.
