Heavy crop as the bird was very distant. Not visible by naked eye.
观察细节
Still present out in the middle of the incompletely plowed field. Mostly standing still but occasionally preening and seen to catch and consume a couple of earthworms. Bobbed head when alerted to something. Pale edges on wing coverts indicate a first year. Surprised it is lingering by itself rather than seeking out other birds for company. In Europe Lapwings are often in the company of other shorebirds, small ducks and/or small gulls. I believe this is the 1st record (pending NJBRC acceptance) for New Jersey. Part of modest influx in November with birds reaching the Azores (Praia Island on 10 Dec 2021) and Canadian Maritimes: Port-au-port Peninsula, Newfoundland (25 Nov 2021), Les Îles-de-la-Madeleine, Quebec (03 Dec 2021), Sable Island, Nova Scotia (10 Dec 2021) and the Atlantic seaboard of the US in December with birds found at Crockett Cove, ME (08 Dec 2021), Milford Point CT (16 Dec 2021), Santapogue Creek Long Island, NY (18 Dec 2021), and Queen Anne's Co. MD (21 Dec 2021). Previously this Cumberland Co. bird was a few miles to the north in Salem Co. (officially found on 21 Dec 2021?) but may have been present earlier.
