Continuing rarity, photographed. Airport hanger manager said the bird has been present for over a week! No other birders were there when I arrived. I located the bird west of the runway, feeding in a soybean stubble field. Once, when three Red-tailed Hawks soared overhead, it called and flew a few hundred feet to the east of the runway and then stood just on the edge of the runway for several minutes. It was about this time when Steve and Debbie Martin arrived and then a short time later Josh Uffman arrived. Big buffy-cinnamon colored shorebird, with long, strongly decurved bill. It walked around feeding almost continuously. We observed it eating grasshoppers and once what looked to be a crayfish. Bird was mostly oblivious to our presence, as it fed from more than 400 yards out, walked to within about 50-75 yards of us and kept walking past us. Josh Uffman & I were watching the bird late this afternoon when it started calling (about 4:15 or so) while it was standing on the runway and looking up. After a few minutes it started calling rapidly, picked up, and flew west out of sight (about 4:19 pm). Be interesting to see if it was flying off to roost at a different location or whether it left. Attached audio recordings were made as the bird called just prior to its departure. On the 2nd recording you can hear the bird start to call more rapidly then the calls start to fade in volume as the bird flies away.
