Susan Haney found a fresh specimen beneath the south facing front windows of the store at 11:30 am on Nov 6. An employee told her that he heard a loud bang that may have been the moment of the strike around 7 am. Normally deceased birds should not be submitted to eBird, however, as described in the review guidelines document (https://support.ebird.org/helpdesk/attachments/48040697242) there are exceptions to this rule for birds that have been reported less than 5 times in the past 5 years in the county (there are no prior Centre County records in eBird), the record is submitted to a historical account with the historical protocol, and the specimen is fresh (no signs of decay, maggots or strong smell). Oats et al. 1984 found that eyes of several bird species tend to become sunken within about 12-24 hours after death in cool conditions. The normally shaped convex eyes of this specimen midday on Nov 6 encourage the interpretation that the death occurred recently. Sharper photo taken in the evening of Nov 6 after the specimen had been frozen for transport to a teaching collection at Penn State (care of Dr. Julian Avery).
