Josh Covill told me that the area around the road and the parking lot to Camp Misery where the trails start looked really good for Boreal Owl. He suggested that if I was camping, I should try for the species. So I did. I used a little playback at my campsite with no response. After a while, I walked up the road, stopping every 100 yards or so and trying again. On about the third or forth stop, at 48.16260, -113.94820, I suddenly got an immediate response in the form of three or four 'skew' calls. I could hardly believe it. I waited for the bird to call again. I tried a little playback of song and calls. It did not respond and I began to doubt myself. Could it have been a tree frog? Am I just using wishful thinking? After 10 to 15 minutes, I finally walked up the road and kept trying. I quickly had the owl again in the parking lot at 48.16108, -113.94820. This time it was more vocal and responsive. I tried locating it without success. It flew a short distance up the road, maybe 50 yards. I tried again to see it. At one point, I saw the bird fly over my head in the darkness. Just slightly darker than the night sky. That gave me the idea... I waited a bit and played its call one more time. As it flew over this time, I was able to get my headlamp on it. A little owl with a large head! I also obtained several recordings of different vocalizations including the skew call, an agitated call, and a soft version of the tooting song. Very cool!
