观察细节
Two photos, provididing different angles of regard, are herewith in order to carefully document this species. They clearly differentiate it from Red-bellied Woodpecker because of the barring on the bird's flanks, which is NOT present on Red-bellied Woodpecker, which, anyhow, is rarely seen this far south. The other bird shown in the second photo (i.e., the one providing a back-side view of Ladder-backed Woodpecker) is a GOLDEN-FRONTED WOODPECKER. (It is higher on the feeder than the Ladder-backed and is off the the left). The Golden-fronted's bill is shown from below, obviating the possibility of seeing the small golden patch that lies immediately above the base of the upper mandible in Golden-fronted Woodpecker. The throat, breast, flanks, and belly of this second woodpecker species are entirely unmarked, as in Golden-fronted Woodpecker, and this bird lacks the dark flank markings of Ladder-backed Woodpecker. Those flank markings are visible in the photo of Latter-backed Woodpecker that provides a side view (i.e., the first photo). The other two birds in the first photo of the Ladder-backed are the underside of a Great Kiskadee and a Red-winged Blackbird seemingly taking wing.
