I was making my way back to say we should probably think about heading home when quite suddenly, with absolutely no fanfare and yet absolute certainty, I saw it in the middle of the Red Caps pond!! It was for all the world like a Sharp Tail, absolutely identical in its aimless potterings and form... but the subtle differences were there; the back was an astonishingly rich chestnut in colour, almost bright orange in fact, the bill was needle-perfect and black, and the neck fine indeed. Most astoundingly of all, though, it was absolutely tiny. I cannot convey how small it was without photos to show scale; it was but a third the size of a Red Cap!! I knew deep down that this was it, even as I zoomed in and fired off shot after shot... and it was!! At last, at close range, the LONG TOED STINT!!!!! In behaviour, the Long Toe is remarkably cautious and aware of its watchers; the moment I tried skirting around to get better light, even at long range, it burst up and wheeled away... and where it landed was also a real quirk; as I've so often heard the Long Toe will avoid mudflats at all costs! My new friend stuck as far from them as it could go, huddled amongst the succulents... and when it lost its nerve and fled again, it waved and swooped far more than any other Wader short of a Snipe; it was impossible to follow its course, and so it slipped into the history books as one of the most charming, perfect little Waders I've ever had the delight of spending time with!!! (Update: it tuns out that in one of the photos I took of my friend amongst the succulents, another one is clearly visible in the picture too! It's interesting that's the case; I did wonder when two little birds darted off, one of which was mine, if the other was another of the resident Long Toes!)
