Same 3rd-cycle Western-type gull observed on Ketchikan waterfront as previous day. I saw this bird again on 23 and 31 January 1992 and obtained photos. From my notes: The bird was very large, with large bill with swollen tip and large gonys angle. Bill yellow with black patch at the tip. The eye was pale yellow (but not bright yellow like a Herring Gull) and it had a yellow eyering (Glaucous-winged x Western gulls typically have a pink eyering). Mantle dark gray with a few brown feathers scattered in coverts and tertials had black centers. Outer primaries were black, as were primary coverts, and primaries had small white tips. The undersides of the secondaries were fairly dusky, as viewed from below. Tail was white with broken band of black blotches. The rest of the plumage was white with some light gray streaking on the head, neck, and breast - streaking was darker through the eye. Feet/legs pink. Could be a Glaucous-winged x Western hybrid. Attached photos are scanned slides.
