A Juvenile Barn Swallow perching and preening on a thorn twig. The Barn Swallow (Hirundo rustica) is the most widely distributed swallow in the world. Much of the European population of Barn Swallows winters in Southern Africa, arriving in September and October and returning to the Northern Hemisphere in March to April. In South Africa Barn Swallows often aggregate in open savanna and reedbeds, with flocks ranging in size from a few tens of birds to thousands. This juvenile Barn Swallow was one of a small group perching and feeding on small flying insects in Pilanesberg National park, South Africa. Elevation: 1305 m. Date added to IBC: April 7, 2019.
