A flock of Welcome Swallows on sitting on seagrass wrack. The Welcome Swallow (Hirundo neoxena) is Australia’s most common species of Swallow, and it has adapted well to human settlements, often building its cup-shaped mud nests under rafters and bridges. Welcome Swallows are agile fliers, catching small insects on the wing although they sometimes feed on the ground. This flock of Welcome Swallows was resting on beached seagrass wrack on the shore of Peel Inlet, south of Perth. Some birds were flying, catching small flies on the wing while others caught them amongst the wrack. Elevation: 0 m. Date added to IBC: September 11, 2018.
