A Musk Duck male swimming. The Musk Duck (Biziura lobata) is Australia’s weirdest waterbird. The male has stiff bristle-like tail feathers and a pendulous inflatable sac dangling under its bill that is used in its mating display. Female Musk Ducks are smaller and have an almost invisible skin lobe under their bills. Musk Ducks are diving ducks, feeding mainly on aquatic invertebrates, small fish, frogs and ducklings, sometimes eating seeds. This male Musk Duck was displaying in the late afternoon at Lake Monger near Perth, Western Australia. After unsuccessfully courting a female he swam off. Elevation: 13 m. Date added to IBC: June 17, 2018.
