A male Red-capped Robin perching. The Red-capped Robin (Petroica goodenovii) is the smallest red robin and is one of Australia’s most beautiful small birds. Red-capped Robins have a wider distribution in Australia than Scarlet Robins, and tend to occur in drier scrub and woodlands, although they are found on the coasts of Western Australia and Queensland. Their distribution partly overlaps with that of the Scarlet Robin. They prey mainly on small insects on the ground that they spy from an elevated perch. This male was sitting on a country road verge in Wandoo (Eucalyptus wandoo) woodland east of Perth, Western Australia. Elevation: 315 m. Date added to IBC: July 12, 2018.
