When I first found this nest, and saw an extremely fast moving (presumably) accipiter flying away from it, I figured it was probably a Besra, since that is the expected accipter at this site. However, the massive nest was the first red flag, as the Besra nests I've seen have been much smaller and more flimsy. A while later, on this date, when I hid and tried to see the bird return to the nest and got these pictures, I was immediately struck by how large the bird was, which was when I realized this was probably a Crested Goshawk and not a Besra. We have had Crested Goshawks nesting rarely but consistently over the decade of this project. James Eaton had this to say about these pictures when asked about the ID of this bird... "It appears massive in body, fluffy undertail coverts, contrasting ear-coverts to crest/crown and a large bill. Besra on Borneo are small dark things, especially on unders - used to nest along road just before top of SST, on left side. Crested Gos for me"
