Two males. It's possible on different visits these were different individuals, but they always appeared together so I doubt it. This is not a good count for this location at this time of year. There were more around earlier in the season. Perhaps the snowy winter in Nome has pushed birds farther south? There are two feeders for these birds on Round The Clock Rd in the Icy View "subdivision." Both had seed, and I also brought my own, but the bunting flocks really preferred (almost entirely) the feeders located at the very end of the road, coordinates: 64.522364, -165.367683. It could be because they are much more protected. The other feeders are located at: 64.521887, -165.369358. The flocks would come and go every 45 minutes or so, but they didn't always contain MKBUs. Jim, the nice man who fills the feeders, mentioned that his wife has also been getting MKBUs along the beach. I checked the beach east of town and didn't see anything but I didn't know the specific area. There are no chickadees coming into these feeders this year.
