NOTES: Possibly a single click from the eel. Right channel - voice annotations. Notes on reel box: "Moray eel #4 monitor. Genuine clicks. and all at once he broke thru - he was fed about one hour before, whether he ate or not is not known, it stopped about as abrupt as it started. Eel was inside his glass jar, (rubber insert) during period of sounds. Eel often found outside jar, when no one is in the area (early morning hours). Sea state 4, winds 20Kts, NW gusty to 30, ship towing IKMW trawl. R-130 amplifier filter both in & out." Handwritten notes inside reel box: "Speckled moray eel #4 tests. 30Oct. after 6 days aboard TRIDENT at 1600 time, pulses were recorded from Eel #4. They were in regular rhythm of 2-8 pulses consecutive, strong & weak. The oscilloscope showed nice pictures. Some were weak, showed on scope but not heard (room background noises were high.) Blowers, pump, etc. After making reel #6, the glass jar eel house was removed and a 3" IC x 14" long rubber hose was substituted. This was to definitely rule out glass house noise (Dr. Napola suggests). Eel went right into new home, appears to like it. The fish food, small herring frozen was still on bottom. Later, a piece of cooked steak was hung in front of his house. Eel has not eaten anything we know of to date 31Oct. No sounds heard. 1Nov. Took out hose tube (home), hoping to stimulate sound. No sounds heard. Eel stayed & bottom, looked up antry at us. Put hose back in, eel stayed out for about 1 hr., then went in. No sounds heard." Additional sheet inside reel box: "Original plans called for monitoring a specific area for the "Bermuda thing" noise, assuming we didn't have it, then throwing in a live moray eel to hear if it infact used echlocation pulses or was the "Bermuda thing" source. In two of three cases, sound pulses (not of the "Bermuda thing") were heard. It is my conclusion that the moray eel is not the "Bermuda Thing." However, the sounds heard were intermittent low frequency pulses, similar to those heard in the Moray eel tank at the Bermuda Aquarium. A 4th eel, smallest of the 7, is held alive and monitored continuously in the TRIDENT lab area, held in a Lister bag, with running salt water. Water temperature was 24C (No sounds actually heard from eels in this tank. Made 1 7" tape with what was static noise in the water flow while the moray eel was present). Made 4 reels of various situations, water on or water off, eel in or out of tank, tank noise only, etc. and there is nothing yet, definite of eel sounds heard in this Lister bag arrangement. Electric (6-volt battery) stimulating was tried, no sounds resulted, got eel mad, to dangerous point. Made WQM-4 sound xmition 180-160000Hz tests, then monitored (using WQM-4 scope) all day 29Oct. No reactions, no sounds 20-160,000Hz.
