One cackling series of ‘keck’ calls - very loud and could be heard from a good distance
观察细节
Finally located my Centre county “nemesis” bird. Nick Kerlin reported a probable COGA from this location earlier in the week and we decided that it was a worthwhile venture to find it. Was wading the center of the East pool when we both heard the bird calling very clearly from the marsh (at this point we knew it was either coot or gallinule). After hearing the bird calling over and over from close range CAE was finally able to glimpse the bird through the heavy vegetation twice for a total of maybe a minute. All dark coot-like bird, red bill and frontal shield with yellow tipped bill, white flares on the undertail coverts, horizontal white marking on sides, and olive back. Super famialir with this species and the recordings should clinch the identification For those who want to search for the bird, here are the directions. Bird was heard calling nearly continuously and seen briefly twice at these coordinates: (40.8454105,-77.9820299). My recommendation would be to walk along 220 in the knee length vegetation until you get close to this spot and wait the bird out. The bird was calling very loudly and could actually be heard from the parking lot pretty clearly. Otherwise you can do what we did and wade out into the pool, with the height of the cattails here that might be the only way to actually get a visual. Two recordings of the bird are attached that I got on my phone.
