Lodgepole pine cones are mostly serotinous (remain closed for years to decades until heated by fire or in some cases extremely hot days) in the South Hills and accumulate along the branches. Crossbills cannot access seeds in the youngest cones (2-5 years old) but as they age and weather (cones to the right in this photograph) crossbills can access some of the seeds. This photograph was taken on 12 June 2013
