This bird was originally a part of a flock of about 15-20 Type 2s and 4s foraging on the bark in a leafless birch tree. All of the others flew off, but this bird remained giving two different kinds of calls while perched. At least one of the two kinds was a typical flight-call. In the background, a small group of Type 4s can be heard. IDs confirmed by Matt Young, Cornell University.
Деталі спостереження
I detected roughly a hundred crossbills in the area I worked. I submitted 14 recordings to Matt Young (Cornell), and Type 2 were detected on 9 of them (Type 4 were detected on 11). As a result, I'm estimating that roughly half of the birds I detected were Type 2s. Some individuals and flocks were type-specific, others were mixed. The habitat included white, red, and jack pines, but mixed flocks seen foraging on cones of red pines, and one flock of type 4 foraged on jack pine.
