NOTES: Neotropical Institute Cut # 24. Bulk reel: 372. Weather: fair. Notes preceding Cut 24: Up to the time of the following recording, the *only* cracid activity noticed was some "boom" song by M. tomentosa for a short while at approximately 5:15 AM. [notes continue on next page with the following] Out afield 9:30PM [9 July 1968] to 2:00 AM [10 July 1968], full moon, clear sky. No cracid activity of any kind noticed. (10July1968 ditto except sky frequently clouded. No cracid activity except 1 isolated alarm burst by "granti".) About 6:30 PM [9 July 1968], at edge of road near camp, two guans and a Crax alector were in a big tree, apparently preparing to roost there; they were still there when it became fully dark. 10 July 1968 - These cracids didn't seem to be in the tree at dawn this AM. I was there from 4:50 AM, clear sky, moon still up. At 5:20 AM heard M. tomentosa and probably C. alector, perhaps the same individual seen last night but now apparently aproximately 500m to the south. No guan display heard. Crowing, *very active*, by jacquacu in the distance at 6:00 AM. Notes for Cut 24: Growl, grunt calls and higher pitched but quiet "conversation" - apparently 2 birds involved, presumable male and female. Quality: 1-2. Level: +10. Parabola: 36".
