Was watching some towhees dancing through the underbrush down the hill between the trail and the road when a hermit thrush popped up for just a moment out of the chapparal shrubs on a log between patches of thick green grass. Mostly brown, white breast with brown spots only on the chest, thin & pointed bill, and upturned tail that's a warmer, reddish-brown than its mostly drab-medium brown back & wings. Quiet! Didn't hear its call or song before it disappeared back into the bush. Photo:
