As I rounded a corner on the trail I spotted a female Northern Bobwhite in the trail. I snapped a couple of photos and almost immediately she went wild. She screamed out alarm calls as I spotted three little spots scramble through the weeds into the undergrowth. To say I saw them is a stretch, but it was clear they were chicks scrambling into the weeds peeping audibly. Instantly, as she continued her alarm calls a male flew out from the undergrowth where the chicks had gone and flew right at me narrowly missing my face. I was surprised it flew up so high. It flew back to the ground, landed four feet from me and began display distraction, fluttering its wings wildly. It was joined for a moment by the female who then flew into the undergrowth where the chicks had gone. I began recording their calls. I could no longer hear the chicks, but the parents continued as I moved about forty feet away. I watched from a distance hoping the chicks would come out, but they never showed. Since the parents continued to be agitated l left them to tend their chicks. This was a new experience for me! The first recording was while I was still near, the second when I had moved away.
