Деталі спостереження
Apparently hybrid of Snowy and Little egrets based on mix of characteristics seen on these two: two long plumes off the back of the head (LIEG) plus short bushy plumes mixed (SNEG). Nuptial plumes more recurved than LIEGs usually show, not as strongly recurved as SNEG in 'high' breeding. Bill shorter than most of the pure LIEGs we've seen in Maine. Lores pinkish, showing some yellow near the eye. Feet a darker shade of yellow than SNEGs typically show. Very aggressive towards SNEGs that got too close to the panne it was foraging in. Would hold crest raised and be very vocal - audio recorded of hybrid chasing SNEG, the latter of which was silent. These returning hybrids have made me question some of the birds I was calling pure, especially around 2020, maybe 2019. The first apparent hybrid has been in this area since 2018. Derek Lovitch reported this (or another hybrid; there were at least two last year) from Tidewater Farm on Sunday, 14 April.
