Immature dark morph. Yellow cere; wingtips slightly longer than tail; dull yellow feet & legs; generally sooty, dark, gray-brown above; blackish brown above. on remiges, especially dark atop primaries; tail gray below when folded but partial darker bars show when spread while perched (not obvious in flight); heavily spotted dark gray-brown below on background which must be gray because it’s dull even in bright sun; a few small similarly light spots on scapulars & medium wing coverts; chin paler than elsewhere, face smooth gray with hint of pale brow & dark eyeline; crown & nape look stippled onto lighter feather bases in close view, but smooth & rounded generally. Flying: dark gray-brown above, slightly lighter at base of tail feathers, considerably darker atop primaries; breast & belly heavily spotted & mottled with dark brown, especially heavy in a broad vest, on a vaguely lighter but not white background; wing linings slightly yellowish gray with leading fine edge darker in photos but not obvious in life; short vague dark line at extremity of wing lining across base of outer ~2 primaries, otherwise smooth transition to slightly darker grayer remiges, each tipped black, including the black entire separated part of the outermost 4 primaries (“fingers”); wings long, narrow, & tapering almost to a point, accentuated in some positions; tail long, even in length, sharp-cornered, sometimes flaring slightly. Perched in dead tree to SW in hedgerow until 1000, then circled overhead, perched in woods to N, was harassed by 2 American Crows, moved lower, then moved out of sight in leafless woods. Photos. NYS bird & FOY. Rare in northbound migration eastward along Ontario lakeshore, & extremely rare elsewhere in Upstate NY. This is the 2nd record for Cayuga Lake Basin, and the first record of a bird which wasn’t simply migrating past. Found & photographed yesterday by Richard Grasso, identified by others on-line, refound this morning by Chris Tessaglia-Hymes, then observed by many before, during & after I was there.
