Деталі спостереження
Viewed from (40.0552289, -88.3847858), all on the north side of the road (until they flushed 1.5 hours later, when they scattered to the southeast). I watched flocks repeatedly take flight and land over the 2 hours I watched, and this is a conservative total (lapland significantly fewer, but scattered in group the whole time). Lifer! I thought I saw them in this exact spot 50 weeks ago when I first drove into Champaign my very first time—nice to finally get to count them! Studied and listened to at length (aided by the fact that many were within 10ft of me for an hour), and happy to say I finally understand the nuance of both smiths and laplands. Utterly delightful experience. Intermediate plumages of both species are interesting to compare (I think smiths look larger), and the trilling call is indeed distinct from Lapland’s. I was particularly charmed by watching the Smiths excitedly chase flies whenever one zoomed past them.
