Деталі спостереження
I was trying to find good riparian habitat along the Cowichan River and drove to the hatchery, which was gated and signs indicate access is not permitted. I had the windows down and heard a song near the gate that sounded bang on for Black-capped Chickadee. I stopped the car, stepped out, and the bird continued to sing repeatedly, confirming it was not just some off notes in the song of a regular species. At this point, I recorded the song on my phone and proceeded to get views to confirm the identification. I then retrieved my camera and got some decent photos to go with the recording. The first confirmed Vancouver Island record of Black-capped Chickadee from Island View Regional Park - in the area from at least August 20, 2021 to May 1, 2022 - pertained to an individual that was surprisingly shy. The one at the hatchery was very vocal and conspicuous, which leads me to suspect this is not the same individual. Subsequent efforts to relocate the bird have been unsuccessful.
