Perched and spreading its wings
Деталі спостереження
First Okaloosa County record. This bird had been spotted and photographed the previous day (Nov 18) by Carol Porch's daughter's family and identified by Carol that day (Nov 18) using eBird's Merlin. This is was an immature bird feeding in a small, forest pond over 6 miles from the Gulf coast, a strange (but not unheard of) location for a coastal/oceanic species. Very tame. Swimming and perched in close proximity to campers and dog-walkers. Lores dull and pale, but certainly not bright yellow or orange. Entire throat white (not just adjacent to the bill) in contrast to the light grayish-brown neck and breast (much of my video was overexposed, so the neck often looked as white as the throat). Light green eye. Gray, robust bill. Flight footage at end of swimming video (and two frames) shows the white belly extending to a point at the vent. Took flight around noon for no apparent reason, maybe headed to the hidden south end of the pond. Roughly 5 prior individuals with eBird records from the Florida Panhandle, but all of their eBird records lacked photographs.
