I heard a chip note I couldn't ID so asked Merlin for some help. It suggested Swamp Sparrow! Being quite skeptical of the ID (only about 75% accuracy for Merlin, especially in the west!), I decided I'd better check it out. I got a quick look before the bird went down in the bush. I played SWSP chip note and it responded immediately. Grey wash across breast with a bit of streaking almost suggesting a spot. Pale buffy flank. Weak rufous wings and tail . Facial pattern and size most like Lincoln's Sparrow. Good looks, no camera! Sibley's adult nonbreeding is a good image for the bird I saw. It was seen on the trail just west of Riley's Bridge in one of the two little shrubs by the bench named for Jeanne Eggert. And then it flew away and did not respond to further playback. What a lovely surprise on a lovely fall day.
