Bird One (photos 1-4) was originally called Arctic Loon with this comment : "Rare but have got a few at Little Shuswap Lake over the years. Videoed this Arctic Loon for quite a distance as it just swam and it did not change the white flank pattern but we were confused with white on frontal neck and chest until realized that breeding Arctic loon retain this pattern well into October. These distinct white spots were the breeding plumage still showing. Extensive white along flanks below line of folded wing and, especially, upward flaring patches at sides of rump (femoral tract), which may be the only area of white visible on active birds, forming oval white patch separating dark flanks from dark under-tail. The femoral feathers are half white in Arctic Loon but entirely dark in Pacific Loon, a key specific difference between the species." After consultation it was changed to Common Loon because the white spot was not far enough back and the bill appeared overly heavy. Bird Two (Picture 5-6) ; The spotted back pattern and The increased black portion of the bill to also cover the lower bill was confusing until we realized that this was not an uncommon molt during second alternate molt in October.
