Деталі спостереження
Continuing rarity found yesterday by Chris Conard. Seen in wet drainage ditch between agricultural fields and river @ (38.4991692, -121.0465761). The bird was also seen moving upriver as far as the bridge, as well as ~100’ downriver from the ditch, on both banks of river. At one point we watched it fly high overhead heading towards Hwy 16, only to find it back in its original location several minutes later. Actively foraging on seeds of grasses and forbs, oftentimes hidden from view when at ground level. Very bright and contrasty bird, even in non-breeding plumage. Striped head consisting of yellow-tan median crown stripe and supercilium broken up by dark brown lateral crown and post-ocular stripes. Shallow forehead:bill angle, with stout yet sharply pointed pinkish bill. Scalloped/streaked pattern on back, with two pale braces. Yellow-tan plumage from head to upper breast, with white belly below and dark streaking along flanks. Called frequently when flying, giving “wink” calls.
