Heard only from near the coordinates given (34.6428583, -111.700714) Audio file tba. Hiked into area leaving 4am in the dark. Went directly to waypoint and listened a while. Went downstream and crossed the creek then returned back to hotspot and met Mark Philippart. We were the only two birders down in the canyon looking for the previously found Veery from yesterday morning by Bobby Wilcox. Mark and I could hear the call, audible decending "Veeeer" somewhat sore throat or flute tonal quality. The bird made the calls steadily for just a half minute. It was quiet for a while and maybe after 10 minutes we heard the call a couple times then it went into the song. It was a descending flutelike dropping off like a fade out. So the bird called and sang very briefly at dawn before sunrise. It was maybe 100-125' away downhill in dark wooded veg with lots of leaf litter down near the creek. Obviously the sound of the creek competed with getting a good recording. We spent an hour or longer hoping for a sighting but got nothing. (While recording, the Merlin Sound ID app immediately identified call/song as Veery. Merlin is far from foolproof, but we were already convinced it was a Veery before I started recording...)
