Деталі спостереження
At the time, we estimated that the raft of gulls extended over 350 yards. Using Google Maps, the flock may have been as much as 450 yards long, viewed from 1.06 miles through a Kowa TSN 822 with a 20x60 zoom. Occasionally, individuals came in or took off, thus providing some scale for judging the flock's density. Double-crested Cormorants provided additional perspective. Counted the flock three times by twenties. The 3,000 total also includes about as many gulls in the air right above the flock on the water. In the setting sun light and against a cloudy sky, we could not obtain photographs of those gulls. This estimate is a minimum. We estimated a potential maximum of 5,000 gulls in the overall area, including those gulls identified by species on this list. This section of the lake is called Dutchman's Creek.
