Report seen on Wild Ontario Facebook page in morning by J. Strudwick. I re-found at 1:45 pm as bird flew from west of the gravel path at the Ottawa River eastward approximately 10-15 m where view was obscured by vegetation. I moved and found the heron along the grassy path adjacent to the west side of the catchment basin where it moved into the catchment basin and across the water to some land in the middle of the basin. The bird walked along the edge of the land until it was obscured by vegetation. Speaking with someone walking in the area, she indicated there had been a heron there the day before (16APR) but did not know what type of heron. Initial impression in flight was of a medium sized heron (larger than black-crowned night heron and smaller than great blue heron). Standing bird confirmed this initial impression. Dark blue-gray bird with long neck and white belly and white plumes on the back of its head, long bill, reddish eye. See attached photos. (OFNC Rare Birds Committee informed of heron on 17APR2020. Official report to OFNC Rare Birds Committee on 18APR2020.)
