Деталі спостереження
Reference the extensive notes of this same orange billed female of the pair that Letha S. first reported on 3/21/21, and that Margaret saw with her on 3/23, in the same area. An aggressive domestic Mallard (pictured in this list) chased them in the water & then in flight, but the pair settled back to their preferred spot on water of the south side of the east lake. Photos together with the larger Mexican Duck and in flight. Letha Slagle 3/21/21 Notes: “ emale of the pair: 1) Plain dull orange bill, ruling out Mallard. Lacks any spot at the base of the bill, more like Mexican 2) Cheek is very slightly darker than the male's cheek on top and cuts to buff below. 3) Smaller than male 4) 5) Wing panel which was observed 3 days later, has almost no white (consistent with Mottled). This is the first report of Mexican x Mottled Duck hybrid in Harris County. Jack Bushong's comments: " The female is a very good candidate for a MEDU X MODU given the reduced upper border to the speculum and the pencil-thin lower border. Compare this to the male which shows relatively broad white borders on both the leading and trialing edges of the speculum. Its bill bill is also a smooth orange without any black on top and its face is perhaps slightly paler and buffier than expected for a MEDU."
