Деталі спостереження
Uncommon winter sighting; juvenile Selasphorus hummer, outer tail feathers wider tipped than the points of an Allen's, specifically at r4 and r5. Shows a collar and tail doesn't look huge pointing away from Broad-tailed. Upon first glance I passed it off as a Ruby-throated (mostly white throat and not much rufous), but upon closer inspection the sides are just too buffy and there appears to be several hints of orange color tipping the mostly green back feathers, along with rufous in the tail (though much less than I’ve previously observed on other east coast winter Rufous Hummers). Coming into nectar on firespike over a ~1hr time window, then gone. Was very noisy and easy to keep track of when around, making numerous chips and light-saber like wing buzzes. Photographed.
