Finally, my 5th check for these here in the fruit trees in front of Joann Fabrics. First a flyover of 4, then 3 birds feeding in fruit trees, and then a flock of 14 counted in flight (7 of which stayed in fruit trees while the others disappeared). All female type. Very tame, allowing approach within a couple feet. Made a mess of the car with crabapple bits. Surprisingly large (larger than I’d thought they’d be!), stocky finches with stubby bills, orange-yellow head, rump, and tinge on breast. Back and underparts gray, all remiges and wing coverts neatly edged in white. When first seen in flight, noted large chunky finches (obviously finches!) with long tails and bounding flight, but not crisscrossing flight pattern of waxwings. When feeding on crabapples in ornamental plantings in the parking lot they did not actually appear to be eating the flesh of the fruit — odd. They would tear into the fruit, reaching the core, and maneuver and process the fruit in their bills before discarding it (and making a total wreck of the place). Perhaps only eating the seeds??? But I thought they were frugivores?? I’ll have to pay closer attention next time. Many people going in and out of the stores and walking through the parking lot passed within a couple feet of them and didn't even notice. Several people, however, did stop and ask what I was looking at. Occasionally gave quiet, sweet notes while perched or gave two-or-three-parted clear, sweet whistles before taking off that sounded extremely similar to a PUFI callnote (not flight call). Makes me feel not so sure about every heard-only PUFI I’ve had...
