Деталі спостереження
Likely rested on lake overnight. . Some birds were sleeping and some groups were already leaving when I arrived. The last flew off about 0830. Tremendous site and sound. Group size and ratio of birds is educated estimate. I spent about an hour just watching and photographing the group, including multiple head counts and zoom-ins to see the demographic makeup of sub-groups within the flock. Courtship head bobbing observed of many males around a female. They were flying towards Auke Bay when they left. It is with frequency that I hear BAGO heading from the ocean especially around N. Auke Bay in the evening heading towards Mendenhall Ice Field; sometimes also heard headed to and from same direction from Back Loop Road at dawn and late dusk, but this is the first time I was able to observe such a large flock close to shore on Mendenhall Lake.
