Деталі спостереження
A quarter of a mile away we could hear these hawks screaming. A mule deer was bounding though the woods and other birds were scolding. Apparently something was up, other than hikers on the trail. We were first starting out near sunrise. Saw two juveniles flying fast over the trail repeatedly and perching on large pines until eventually landing on a dead tree. The juvenile call (audio recording) was different from an adult calling further back in the forest. During our time observing, the adult did not make an appearance, but did respond to the juvenile screams. Large hawk with a relatively short tail marked with four uneven bands visible on perching and in flight. Feathers on back were gradient colored with white edging, brown and cream color. Both juveniles had pale yellow eyes characteristic of this species. In the second recording you can hear the adult in the background just before the first two calls from the young bird.
