Dark-winged Kumlien's Gull originally thought to be possible Thayer's Gull.
Деталі спостереження
Dark-winged Kumlien's Gull originally thought to be possible Thayer's Gull. The bird was foraging atop the hillside with a pair of adult GBBGs and some adult Herring Gulls, which were slightly larger. With wings folded, the primary feather coloration was evidently different from surrounding HERGs. Streaks across face and head forming a hooded appearance. Three species come to mind when trying to identify this gull based on plumage, leg color, size, etc.-- Herring Gull, Thayer's Gull, and dark-winged Kumlien's gull. Oddly-colored HERG can be ruled out by overall size plus bill size/shape. In partially open-winged photo, can count out 4 dark primaries, which also puts this gull within the THGU/Kumlien's category; however, dark primaries appear to be dark gray, rather than black, ruling out THGU and pointing to dark-winged Kumlien's gull. Pale pink legs as opposed to bright pink seen in adult THGU also indicate dark-winged ICGU (Kumlien's).
