A Buff-banded Rail hunting amongst flooded grass – in broad daylight. The many subspecies of the Buff-banded Rail (Hypotaenidia philippensis) are widely distributed throughout Australia, New Zealand, Papua, the Pacific and some of the islands of the Philippines and Indonesia. The Australian subspecies (Hypotaenidia philippensis mellori) occurs in the more humid areas of south-western and eastern Australia, and is found in a variety of wetland habitats, both fresh and saline. Buff-banded Rails prefer areas of dense vegetation with good cover, and are usually shy, dashing between clumps of cover. They mainly feed on small aquatic invertebrates, hunting in the early morning and the evening. This bird is the exception to the rule – it was hunting amongst flooded grass on the edge of Herdsman Lake near Perth in Western Australia at midday, and was not shy, allowing me to approach cautiously to within about 15 metres. Elevation: 7 m. Date added to IBC: September 15, 2019.
