A male Pied Butcherbird gathering nesting material amongst a pile of camping equipment. The Pied Butcherbird (Cracticus nigrogularis)is widely distributed in Australia, and is particularly common in semi-arid habitats. It is one of the best Australian songbirds, and it has a rich, complex melodic song that varies with location – mostly sung at dawn. It often sings antiphonally with other Pied Butcherbirds, and is also an accomplished mimic. Like other Butcherbirds it preys on a wide variety of invertebrates and small vertebrates, including small birds. This male Pied Butcherbird was gathering bits of wind-blown grass from its nest amongst a stockpile of camping gear on Wooleen Station in the Murchison area of Western Australia. Elevation: 293 m. Date added to IBC: September 11, 2018.
