A Southern Lapwing chick crossing the road - alone. The elegant Southern Lapwing (Vanellus chilensis) is the only crested Lapwing species in South America, ranging from Central America to Tierra del Fuego. They are conspicuous, inhabitants of modified landscapes such as cropland, pastures and parklands, and also occur near wetlands and estuaries. They feed on insects and worms as well as small fish and aquatic invertebrates. Southern Lapwings allow their chicks to explore, but are usually close by, watching for danger and intervening if needed. This adventurous chick was crossing the road in front of the Belmond Hotel das Cataratas in Iguacu National Park in Brazil. Elevation: 214 m. Date added to IBC: February 20, 2019.
