Photo from James Tennyson. First noticed these birds by sound as we were working. Looked up and three rather large, all dark birds were flying toward the island we were on, low over the water. They were making the typical high-pitched chattering calls to each other. They landed on the island, I said I think they are oystercatchers, Emily and James agreed, and then we were dumbfounded. They stayed on the island a bit, bobbing up and down; we got photos, then they flew around and came back to the island. We played their vocalizations on James's smartphone after they departed again, and they wheeled around to us again. At one point they were in the right light, front lit, for perfect views. Stout, all red bills, longish. All dark body with pale legs (I did not notice if they were white or pink, just obviously pale in contrast to all black body). All flight was within 10-15 ft of the water, low. They eventually flew off together toward the south.
