Деталі спостереження
Second cycle individual with adult like head, mantle and scapulars. Wings were similar to those of a 1st winter CAGU, with tail boldly piebald with blackish central rects, purely white 1-2 rects adjacent on both sides (likely R2-R3), and blacking outers. Full writeup, as well as photos and video will be submitted to MBRC. Here is the description Rick and I co-wrote as we drove home together: California Gull 1 Found by Tim Baerwald an hour earlier. 2nd cycle bird. Head: Bill dull yellow with red spot on gony behind black band. Bill shape attenuated comp. to near HERG w. very little gony angle. All White. Iris a uniform dark brown. Orbital ring unseen. More smoothly rounded head profile than adjacent RBGU's. Nape: Sides w. remnant flecking. Mantle & scaps: Uniformly median gray w/o obvious brownish markings. 1 to 2 Kodak clicks darker than RBGU at all angles. Wings: Lacked any significant amount of adult color on upper. Greater coverts browner than mantle being relatively uniform brownish gray w. innermost being adult mantle gray. Secondaries blackish with white terminal band. Primaries uniform blackish. Slight inner primary window on P2 & 3, but less than HERG. Both P1 missing with new growing in. Thinner & longer primary projection beyond tail than RBGU. Tertials dark gray w. paler fringes, but not defined, more blended. Tail: Inner rect's all blackish w. white R2 & 3 and blackish R4-6. Throat, breast, sides, belly, flanks, under & uppertail covs all white. Legs: More greenish yellow than adult RBGU. Size: While on water slightly longer than near RBGU. Bulk same as RBGU.
