NOTES: Habitat: Savannah with open plains and valleys wooded with Acacia xanthophloea; Microphone: Gramp DP5; The animals would be amonth the rocks on the side of the mountain. only one is heard,; but there would be many in the colony. the usual high pitched mewing cry of the species would possibly be the warning call but this is not certain. often these animals do vocalize as the dark falls. the editor is not sure as to waht this means. "Dassies form an order by themselv3es, and in spite of their rodent-like appearance are more closely related to the elephant than any otyher ungulates." see cited references). *Dorst, Jean and Dandelot, Pierre, A Field Guide to The Larger Mammals of Africa. London: Collins, 1970. Background Sounds: Pycnonotus barbatus tricolor, Hirundo abyssinica, Laniarius funebris, the birds can be heard very clearly just following the first 'mew' of the Hyrax; Habitat: Savannah.
