Yesterday I saw a female Amazon Kingfisher on the Peruvian side of the Macara River. After being informed how unusual such a report would be, I went back this morning, this time with my camera which I did not take yesterday out of concern about military and police presence not tolerating photographs at a border crossing (that would definitely be true in the U.S.). Well the military did not care at all about my camera. The female Amazon was still present and I photographed her. I have provided that photo to the Ecuadorian ebird reviewer. I am reluctant to post it here because it will show up as an Ecuador bird even though I am not sure the bird was ever in Ecuador. On the other hand. . . Today there was a male flying helter skelter low over the river and at times over Ecuador land. It repeatedly flew up and down the river but I only saw it perch distantly and then at the same spot east of the bridge on the Peru side. It would always fly passed the female who did not seem to react to the male. I did try photographing the male and include that distant photo. The photo is of the back, showing no white in the wings as a Green Kingfisher would have and an enormous bill for one of the "green" kingfishers. The male was way too big for a Green Kingfisher and its flight was not the buzzy flight of a Green Kingfisher that always appears to me as if it could not wait to get out of the air. As for the female I never saw it fly during the three times I saw her (twice yesterday and then this morning.
