Gözlem detayları
Female Haemorhous, chunkier and larger-headed than a House Finch, shorter primary projection than Cassin's, stubbier bill than Cassin's with curved culmen. Greenish tinged overall, bolder facial pattern than Cassin's with pale downcurved sueprcillia and pale malar stripe, lack of white eyering or eye-arcs, blurry low-contrast streaks on mantle, blurry streaks below unlike the crisp streaking of Cassin's Finch. I first detected it by the very distinctive "pik pik pik" calls, which I suspected were a Purple Finch before I saw the bird. Then it landed in a tree near me and continued to give those calls that are entirely unlike any calls given by House or Cassin's Finch. Feeding on crabapples in the far NE portion of the arboretum, loosely with waxwings, robins, and juncos. Lots of House Finches around, but did not see the PUFI associating with them. Wasn't planning on birding, so no camera, but maybe I'll get back there in coming days. I scrambled for my phone, trying to decide whether to go first for a phone photo or a voice recording, but before I could do either it was gone. After walking further down the arb, I returned and refound it in the same area and got the one mostly-useless photo.
