Two minima towards the back, the probable Aleutian in front
Gözlem detayları
Within the large flock of "minima" Cackling Geese, 2 geese stood out as being slightly larger, lighter breasted. Closer look showed they both had the blocky, squarish head found in the "Aleutian" race. One bird had a complete white neck collar, it's "mate" had a partial. Another field mark of Aleutian is the break in the white-cheek, being black under it's chin. One picture shows this. These birds had shorter thicker necks than the more expected "Taverner's", the other light breasted Cackling Goose seen here. The two birds traveled together, walking along the shoreline, feeding higher up the beach than the minimas. Later on my walk, I found a 3rd bird, also noticed by it's larger size and lighter breast. This 3rd bird had a broad white neck collar, that completely circled its neck. Also had the squarish, blocky head. There is one distant photo of this 3rd bird. Believe these characteristics make these 3 birds likely Aleutians.
