Continuing basic plumage individual just shy of the 1 mile mark. Smallish loon with cool dark slate upperparts and white underparts. Sharp vertical line of demarcation between coloration on sides of the neck. Smallish dark bill much narrower than the lanceolate bill of a Common Loon. Rounded "puffy" head compared to the blocky head of a Common. Dark coloration of crown extending to the eye (face not as pale as expected for a Red-throated). Narrow dark chinstrap diagnostic. Floating and diving apart from the handful of Common Loons also present. Head often held tilted upward.
