Shrieking calls from nearby fledglings can be heard in the background of this cut. The Vermilion Flycatcher is scolding the adult GHOW. Time of recording: 19:28.
Gözlem detayları
When I arrived, I found the 3 fledglings hopping around actively and shrieking in a big mesquite. The male was perched in a nearby tree with a rodent, perhaps a pack rat. He was calling almost constantly, mostly hooting series, but I also heard the honking call that I associate with female GHOWs twice. After a few minutes I realized that I could hear a distant female calling back from the vicinity of Cactus Blvd and Allen Rd. The male flew to a nearby utility pole with the prey item, and continued to counter-call with the female. After a few more minutes the female flew in and briefly perched on top of the pole with him; he passed her the prey item and flew to a nearby tree. They called for a minute, and then when she began to eat he flew away to the southwest. Presumably this is a new female that he is attempting to win over, since according to neighbors, the resident female in the territory died from poisoning last month. After eating (silently) for a few minutes the female also flew away to the south. The male returned around 20 minutes later, called once, and visited two palm trees. I assumed he was picking up cached prey but when he flew out of the second tree he headed away from the fledglings toward the tennis courts.
