NOTES: #5338. An unusual wood pewee song. Recorded in early morning, just after dawn song session. Better level after 1:20. Also heard road traffic, train whistle, chipping. [The vocalizations here are those of Sayornis phoebe, NOT Contopus virescens, which has no vocalizations that sound even remotely like these. With two exceptions, all 57 vocalizations here represent Type 2 Regularly Repeated Vocalizations (RRV2s; see Smith, W. J. 1969. Displays of Sayornis phoebe (Aves, Tyrannidae). Behaviour 33:283-322). The vocalization at 0:485 does not match anything shown by Smith (though it does appear to have been given by this species), but the soft "peep" at 3:18 appears to represent an Initially Peaked Vocalization. Although I did not find support in the available recordings for the comment in BNA that bouts with more than 50% RRV2s are rare, this was the only recording that I listened to in which ALL RRVs were this type. Quality changed from 1-2 to 2, 1-2 (BEST after 2:28 - but note that recorded seemed to be off-speed for the two songs at 3:29-3:33) - CAM - 14 April 2005] LNS: Subject changed from Contopus virens to Sayornis phoebe based on recommendation of Curtis Marantz and personal experience.--Jay McGowan 2Apr2013.
